Regardless, the summer is a great time to make a strategic career move. Hiring needs don’t stop and there are several reasons why you wouldn’t want to put your search on hold.
- Less Competition. Many people do put their searches on hold over the summer. This gives savvy job searchers an advantage (less competition = more leverage). Companies hire year-round and are eager to onboard during the summer so that everyone is up to speed for the fall.
- Hiring managers know that people have vacations planned and are willing to work around it. One candidate we worked with needed three weeks off to travel back to India for her wedding. Caveat: bring it up at offer time. Do not wait until you start to mention it.
- Your boss will expect you to take time off, so it's easier to keep your search confidential. It's expected that most people will take some time off during the summer. Whether it's a few long weekends or 1-2 weeks. Confidentiality is key to most job searches, and it's often easier to request time off when your manager is expecting it.
- People are actually eager to network in the summer. Who doesn't want a reason to leave the office (even a home office) on a gorgeous summer day for a cup of coffee or lunch?
- Summertime is more casual. Even busy people with a lot of deliverables take a more casual approach to interviewing during the summer. It's a great opportunity to get to know your future coworkers on a more informal basis.
