Many of you are planning for annual reviews. It’s easy to sit back and bask in the appreciation and kudos that your boss is sure to bestow upon you. But we suggest that you approach it actively, not passively. To prepare for the year-end review, set aside some time during the next two months to conduct a self-assessment and begin setting goals now for next year.
Before your review:
During your review:
After your review:
Regardless of how the review evolves, keep a firm eye on your 2023 goals and put together your plan for how to achieve them.
Before your review:
- Reflect.
- What have you worked on?
- What have you achieved?
- Did you accomplish your goals for the year?
- Predict.
- Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
- What are your goals for next year?
- How can you expand your industry knowledge?
- Prepare.
- Outline an agenda.
- Write out a list of your contributions and goals to have handy during the meeting.
During your review:
- Listen with an open mind to all critical feedback.
- Be an active participant. Remind your boss of some of the major accomplishments and achievements.
- Solicit feedback about your performance.
- Ask what skills you could continue to develop.
- Discuss future opportunities or projects you would like to be involved in.
After your review:
- Adjust your work based on feedback you received.
- Follow up on projects you want to partake in.
Regardless of how the review evolves, keep a firm eye on your 2023 goals and put together your plan for how to achieve them.
