4 Steps to Nailing that Interview… On Zoom!

The Andrews & Cole Team

As we previously discussed in our article, 4 Steps to Nailing that Interview, interviews are nerve-wracking. But what about when that interview is via video chat? Virtual interviews may be more stressful than in-person interviews. Not only can video calls present unforeseeable issues due to unreliable technology, but the protocol for these types of interviews has not yet been established. Here are four tips to help you navigate the new norms regarding video interviews:

1. Dress professionally.

Dress like you would for an in-person interview. Just because your interview is virtual does not mean you should dress down. Taking that extra step to throw on a tie or jacket will convey that you are eager and excited about the position.

2. Maintain eye contact.

On a video chat, maintaining eye contact is tricky because you cannot really look at the interviewer’s eyes without appearing distracted. The best way to simulate eye contact is to look directly at the camera.

3. Limit distractions.

Control as many distractions as possible. Eliminate background noises and set your camera up in front of a plain background.

4. Prep your technology skills.

In addition to prepping your substantive knowledge for an interview, you should also practice using the video software. The Andrews & Cole recruiters can help you adjust lighting and sound, as well as provide even more tips to ensure a smooth virtual interview experience.
