Andrews & Cole, LLC
accounting and finance search and consulting
Greetings!
Many people find New Years to be a good time to develop a list of resolutions, but I’d suggest setting aside some time during the next 2 months to conduct a self assessment and begin setting goals now for 2006. Many of you will be experiencing annual reviews from both sides of the desk, but even as an employee, you want to be prepared. When you walk into your review, have details of both your accomplishments for the past year, as well as a list of goals for the following year. Solicit feedback from your boss about your performance, what you have done well, what you can do better. Are there skills s/he thinks you should be building to keep advancing in the company? Be prepared to discuss what you’d like to work on in the coming year, special projects you’d like to work on or positions you’d like to be considered for. Don’t assume that, if you’re working hard, the opportunities will come to you. It’s up to you to market yourself within your own company and to take an active role in your career development and progression...ND

Candidate's Corner
Post-interview etiquette...do people still write "thank-you notes"?
Yes, they do! A thank you letter is a great way to show your interest, reiterate your relevant experience, and demonstrate your writing skills. Some key points:
- Make every attempt to send your letter within 24 hours, but if you can’t, it’s never too late.
- Most people respond more favorably to a business letter. After all, it’s an interview, not a social occasion. Format it like a business letter: a Word document with an inside address and a date and all those things you learned in your Freshman Writing seminar.
- The letter should be 5-10 sentences, discussing your skills and your interest in the position and following up on 1 or 2 key points from your discussion .
- If you send out letters to everyone you met, customize each letter, so you’re not sending out 5 versions of the same letter.
- THOROUGHLY proof each letter for spelling, grammar and content .
- If you think the company is looking to make a quick decision, email the letter as an attachment, then send it out in the mail.
Please note, a quick email saying, “Thanks for meeting with me” really isn’t appropriate. While it’s better than nothing, it’s too informal and it’s unimpressive.
Guest Columnist - Careers in Accounting
by Katia Azar, Director of Internal Audit, Clark Construction Group, LLC
When I left Public Accounting (Big 4), I elected to try and see what Internal Audit was like, and I have not regretted it. It has not been boring! There is no doubt that today’s current environment has changed with the advent of Sarbanes-Oxley and that Internal Auditors are in demand. However, a career in Internal Audit should not mean that you are only focused on SOX compliance and accounting issues. Internal Auditors must assess risk throughout the organization and that means you must not only have a thorough understanding of the operations of an organization, but also its strategic goals and objectives. Internal Audit maintains a global view of the company and takes the role of "business partner" where we can make recommendations that affect every business unit throughout the company to create positive change. Internal Audit is essentially like an in house consultant, which makes our work more interesting and exciting. You are continuously working on new projects or business issues, interacting with other business units and providing ongoing advice. But above all, Internal Auditors are visible within the organization, which can lead to almost any kind of different opportunity for an individual.
