Happy Winter!
Just when we thought we’d go right from Fall to Spring, we’re hit with heavy duty wintry weather. I guess if we have to be indoors working OT, it may as well be nasty outside. (And, yes, we in the recruiting world, like our candidates and clients are slammed this time of the year, too!).
On that note, it is with great pleasure that we welcome back Brooke Fisher! Brooke was here from the founding of Andrews & Cole, but took a brief hiatus from recruiting. During that time, we received many, many emails and calls from people who missed her dearly. You’ll be happy to know she is back, working with both candidates and clients.
Brooke’s homecoming provides additional depth to our team, and will further enhance our ability to find the right professional for every client and the ideal career opportunity for every candidate. We also expect to more consistently deliver timely e-news regarding career and organizational development, general economic and labor market news. Please keep the feedback coming regarding information you’d like to see in our e-newsletters.
Employee Spotlight
Our roving reporter recently caught up with Brooke over coffee and birthday cake:
What did you miss about recruiting?
Two things: Interacting with the candidates on a daily basis to help them to achieve their personal and professional goals and working with our client companies, learning about their plans for the future and helping them put the right staff in place to achieve them. The Washington DC metro area is so diverse and dynamic and the opportunities for top accounting and finance professionals are so broad that recruiting for both clients and candidates in this market continues to inspire me after almost 7 years.
Favorite recruiting story?
Nicole DelToro and I visiting one of our biggest clients on the day she was due to deliver her first son. Now that’s dedication! They were doing a lot of hiring and Nicole wanted to make sure that before she went out on maternity leave, I had met the client, knew their organizational structure and their specific needs. We had arranged for her to signal me in case she went into labor, but luckily she didn’t deliver for another few days!
Craziest job you ever had?
During college, I had a summer job working for U- Drive Boat Rentals on Pontoosac Lake in the Berkshire Mountains. Though the name seems self explanatory, I was asked several times each day if we provided a driver!
What advice would you give a candidate?
Be open to the right opportunity whenever it comes along. When people are “looking” for a position, they generally want to change jobs within a month or two. This severely limits the opportunities that can be presented to them because they are left choosing from only the positions that happen to come open in that narrow span of time. I have seen too many people make the wrong career move because of this. Opportunity is all about timing. You could be the staff accountant at a dynamic company and have greater future opportunity than the top person at a stagnant company!
I would also suggest that candidates focus on the career-related issues that are important to them, not to their friends or peers.
What one piece of advice would you give a client looking to fill a position?
In today’s tight labor market, the top professional candidate has many opportunities to consider. Make sure you communicate what makes your company stand apart from the rest to both the search firm and directly to the candidate during the interview process. The interview is not just a time for you to get to know whether the candidate is the right fit for you. It is your time to shine and make the best impression possible regardless of whether you wind up hiring that person.
